For some reason, until last evening my experiences were the same as yours.
After Peter's patient help, I took a deep breath, unpacked the tarball
and:

$ ./configure ; make coda

Works fine now.  Possibly I was thinking "make coda" and typing "make"..

Give it a shot, it really does work.
