So why don't you start the portmapper on the server.

 /etc/rc.d/init.d/update.init start

Then check with "ps auxwww" if all of the following processes are
running. rpc2portmap, updateclnt, updatesrv.

Only if those are running bldvldb.sh will be able to get access to the
volume creation information on the server.
