I was running a 2.4.16 kernel on the problem child...  I upgraded to 2.4.18
today, and it's now working perfectly!  Thanks to those who replied for the
quick info.  I'll continue testing, but I haven't been able to create any
new issues with the current kernel installed.

This is a kernel problem, which kernel version are you using?

Easiest fix is to build linux-2.4.19-rc1 and see whether I managed to
fix it.
