Hmm, according to what I can find in my CVS logs, this should affect all
servers that were built between 10/2/2001 and 5/24/2002 which includes
release 5.3.19. But it only happens with clients that use the new CML
packing, which they didn't start using until 3/14/2002, i.e. after
release 5.3.19.

Which means that Coda servers from release 5.3.19 incorrectly interpret
the symlink reintegration from a 5.3.20 client.

To make a little matrix,

    servers	5.3.19	5.3.20
clients
5.3.19 good good
5.3.20 bad good

You must have been bitten by that one bad case.
