Coda File System

fqdn & host names

I notice that the server host name is kept in files like
    hostname
    db/scm
    db/servers
    db/vicetab
    VSGDB
as
    wanchai
not as a fully-qualified domain name (wanchai.cc.gatech.edu). This causes
failure at server startup time unless you have a
    search cc.gatech.edu
entry in your /etc/resolv.conf file.

The questions are:
  - Why are host names stored this way? Why not as an fqdn?
  - Can I alter these files to use fqdn's with impunity?
